This is a collection of portraits that I made for the late, great bass player, Victor Bailey, for his Slippin' n' Trippin' album.
My wife, Molly and I, lived across the hall from Victor, and became friends with him during that time.. In addition to being a world renown, master of his craft, Victor was a warm and genuine guy, with a quick wit and a silly side.. He was a strong and proud man with a kind and gentle soul. His daily reality, living with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (a genetic condition that is, basically, a type of muscular dystrophy) couldn't have been easy, but, you'd have never known it - Victor always had a smile to offer, never accepted my many attempts at lending a hand, when he'd be loading in or out for a gig or session.. Honestly, he couldn't have been a better human being as far as I could tell, and he was definitely the best neighbor we ever had in Brooklyn!
Victor Bailey, born March 27, 1960, passed away on Friday, November 11, 2016 after a long and admirable fight with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, and later ALS/Lou Gehrig's disease.
In 2014, he was quoted saying, “Oh man, listen, I’ve had a blessed life. I’m not even religious at all, but if there’s a god and people are blessed, I’m blessed. I’ve done exactly what I wanted to do my entire life and continue to do so. And nothing anybody says changes anything. No criticism, no… anybody… I have always done and continue to do exactly what I want to do. I’m a really lucky guy.”
Rest in peace, Victor - you may be gone, but you'll never be forgotten. Thanks for all the love, it was mutual.
These photographs have never been published, most have not been seen. If you are interested in licensing or purchasing a print, please let me know - I'm especially interested in opportunities to raise some funds to help his family offset his medical bills.
Sending peace, love, and a lot of hugs to the entire Bailey Family.
